Their goods are traditionally sold in Herat in Afghanistan or Quetta and Peshawar in Pakistan. They tend to be all-over geometric designs using typical dark reds and blues for colouration though beige is also found. Orange, gold, white and green are also used as secondary colours. Sizes tend to be standardized from 4’ x 2’ up to 6’ x 4’, with some larger pieces found occasionally. Many of the smaller rugs are asymmetric prayer rugs so that they can be laid down and pointed to Mecca for times of prayer. Belouch rugs are quite fine - the finest of all the tribal weaves in large-scale production today and represent very good value for money. The Afghan and Turkoman influence can be seen by the use of the polygonal motifs (known as guls or elephant’s foot) as the various tribes intermingle. Generally woven with a wool pile on a woolen warp. The selvedges are often finished using goats wool which is said to deter snakes entering the tent or hut. Seemingly modern designs have always been produced, old and new versions can now be readily found.

These old Belouch are up to 100 years old but are still in excellent condition with little sign of wear.

Hand-made in Afghanistan from hand-spun wool and natural dyes. These rugs are woven by settled Armenians as well as nomadic Kurds, Georgians, Azerbaijanis and Lurs. Many of the people of Turkoman origin fled to Pakistan when the Russians invaded Afghanistan and most of the rugs are woven close to Peshawar on the Afghan-Pakistan border. There are many design influences and consequently a large variety of motifs of various medallions, diamonds, latch-hooked zig-zags and other geometric shapes. However, it is the wonderful natural dye colours used with rich reds, blues, yellows and greens which make them stand out from other rugs. The ability of the Caucasian weaver to use dramatic colours and patterns is unequalled in the rug weaving world. All our Kazak are knotted in hand spun wool which is much thicker ply than machine spun wool. Consequently, the knots pack in more densely giving a very inexpensive and extremely hardwearing rug. We have the fringes cut back and tea dyed to give the illusion of age, but in fact all these rugs are brand new. They suit very contemporary to the most traditional settings. A most versatile rug. He started to commission a much higher grade of Afghan carpet using traditional and more unusual Afghan tribal designs that he thought would die out if not reproduced at that time. The workshop eventually was taken over by his family after his death and continued in production until the end of WW2, when the ravages of this time ceased the weaving of these remarkable quality rugs. This means that true Khal Mohammadi rugs should be over 70 years old. We currently buy these pieces in the bazaar of Peshawar in Pakistan as the refugees from the current conflict in Afghanistan bring out with them some of these wonderful examples of the weaver and dyers art. However, we also believe there is new production of these rugs which are mixed in with the older pieces at the bazaar. We also have some very fine pieces that were exclusive to a London Department store which because of their change to a very modern aesthetic they no longer take. These rugs are woven by settled Armenians as well as nomadic Kurds, Georgians, Azerbaijanis and Lurs. Many of the people of Turkoman origin fled to Pakistan when the Russians invaded Afghanistan and most of the rugs are now woven close to Peshawar on the Afghan - Pakistan border. The super Kazak and Turkoman rugs are very fine version utilising very lustrous Afghani Ghazni wool and double the knots.
Fine Kazaks, as the name implies contain more knots and use more colours in their design and weave than regular Kazaks.

Every pile rug has a nap so that the pile lies in one direction.
