Fine Old Belouch - D1495

Product Description

Size 190 x 113 cm, 6'3 x 3'8

Our Belouchi rugs are a mix of Persian and Afghan tribal production. Their goods are traditionally sold in the spectacular cities of Maschad in Iran, Herat in Afghanistan or Quetta and Peshawar in Pakistan. They tend to be all-over geometric designs using typical dark reds and blues for colouration though beige is also found. Orange, gold, white and green are also used as secondary colours. Sizes tend to be standardized from 4’ x 2’ up to 6’ x 4’, with some larger pieces found occasionally. Many of the smaller rugs are asymmetric prayer rugs so that they can be laid down and pointed to Mecca for times of prayer. Belouch rugs are quite fine - the finest of all the tribal weaves in large-scale production today and represent very good value for money. The Afghan and Turkoman influence can be seen by the use of the polygonal motifs (known as guls or elephant’s foot) as the various tribes intermingle. Generally woven with a wool pile on a woolen warp. The selvedges are often finished using goats wool which is said to deter snakes entering the tent or hut. Seemingly modern designs have always been produced, old and new versions can now be readily found.

These old Belouch are up to 100 years old but are still in excellent condition with little sign of wear.

Hand-made in Afghanistan from hand-spun wool and natural dyes. This rug contains approximately 344000 knots, and would have taken 57 days to weave and finish.

Every pile rug has a nap so that the pile lies in one direction. This means there is a lighter end and and darker end for each rug which is why there are photographs from both ends.
