Fine Gabbeh - KE1342

Product Description

Size 200 x 143 cm, 6'7 x 4'8

The term Gabbeh does not refer to a particular tribe of people but rather to the style of weaving worked by any one of a number of different tribes originally from Iran.  One must remember that the Moghul hordes conquered northern India bringing with them the skills of carpet weaving and other fine artisanship.  So do not think of the Indian pieces as mere copies but as an evolution of artistic development. The actual meaning of the word Gabbeh in Farsi is “thick”.  They are nearly always naive in their depiction of animals, with backgrounds that reflect the topography of their transient settlements whether it be a desert, mountain or meadow.  Hence they can come in a multitude of colours such as a green and multicoloured speckled ground which would represent a  field in spring, full of flowers, to the berber natural wools that evoke a desert or barren place. Our current Indian supplier has produced versions that are the finest we have ever purchased and a superb quality. Often utilizing soft New Zealand wool that they import being part of the Commonwealth.

Hand-made in India from hand-spun wool and natural dyes. This rug contains approximately 457600 knots, and would have taken 76 days to weave and finish.

Every pile rug has a nap so that the pile lies in one direction. This means there is a lighter end and and darker end for each rug which is why there are photographs from both.

We highly recommend purchasing this rug with our top quality German underlay as it vastly improves the life of your carpet and guards against slipping accidents.

It has a 10 year non-stick, non-crumble guarantee. To learn more click here.
