These rugs are Turkoman tribal rugs from Northern Afghanistan using local Ghazni hand spun wool, which is probably the best wool in the world for hand knotted rugs. These Hazara tribes people are mostly Shia Muslim and badly persecuted by the Taliban majority. Beautifully finished with bound fringes, we have rarely found such a special collection of such gorgeous rugs. Very finely knotted using natural dyes but woven at almost the maximum density for hand-spun as it has a thicker ply of wool. This combined with the long staple Ghazni wool requiring less twisting when handspun means the lustre is incredible with a wonderful difference from whichever end the rug is viewed from. Consequently they will last over generations. Although they tend to copy the Bokhara elephant foot design we try to buy rugs from these tribes people that are from their own designs and culture, these typically include their local shawl patterns and rustic interpretations of animals, trees and flowers.

Every pile rug has a nap so that the pile lies in one direction. This means there is a lighter end and and darker end for each rug which is why there are photographs from both ends.
