Fine Indo-Nepali - KE1552

Product Description

Size 293 x 200 cm, 9'7 x 6'7

Much of our India weaving takes place around the ancient city of Varanasi on the Ganges River. Nearby is the Buddhist site of Sarnath where Buddha passed away and became a place of pilgrimage for his followers. Consequently, there are many Nepalese Buddhists settled in the area who hand weave their unique style of rug which is very complimentary to todays modern aesthetic. They utilize a variety of yarns from fine New Zealand wools (India and New Zealand being part of the Commonwealth) to bamboo silks and man-made lustrous fibres. Regardless of traditional or contemporary designs, these are excellent examples of the many centuries of experience that has gone into rug weaving in this region, ever since the Persian Moghuls conquered this area and brought the ancient skills of carpet knotting to this region.

Hand-made in India from hand-spun wool and natural dyes. This rug contains approximately 937600 knots, and would have taken 156 days to weave and finish.

Every pile rug has a nap so that the pile lies in one direction. This means there is a lighter end and and darker end for each rug which is why there are photographs from both.
